Looking for sturdy furniture but furniture that is also beautiful? Call Big Drawers!

Fashion industry statistics show that nearly two-thirds of all American adults are considered plus-sized. While we may not agree completely with that assessment, we would agree that large and tall people have a hard time finding high quality furniture that is comfortable, elegant and sturdy.

Today it is much easier to find over-sized furniture designed to enhance the plus-size lifestyle. At Big Drawers, you will find craftsmen who custom create sturdy furniture to fit your personal needs. You can design your own office, home or outdoor furniture in the dimensions you need. Choose from the finest woods from all over the world or choose from rare, reclaimed woods from old buildings.

The term “sturdy” may bring to mind clunky, plain, heavy, drab furniture that is not very appealing to the eye. Rid yourself of that perception right now! Today’s sturdy furniture is built to beautifully enhance any décor and be comfortable for practical use. Custom-built, over-sized furniture pieces are built to last. At Big Drawers, you will find traditional building techniques such as dovetailing and mortise-and-tenon joinery used to augment the strength of each piece.

If you are an average-sized person, you probably don’t see the problem the same as a plus-size person. Imagine yourself seated in a chair from a kindergarten classroom; the chair would not be a fit, and it would be unsafe for you to remain seated in it. Further imagine that this was what you encountered every time you went out and tried to find a seat; there is a very real need for oversize, sturdy furniture.

If you are blessed with a larger- or taller-than-average-size-body, give yourself the gift of comfort, long wear and stability. Order custom-created over-sized sturdy furniture built specifically for you at Big Drawers!

Eliminate Wasted Space with Custom Built-in Furniture

custom built-in furniture

Have space available? Consider using it for custom built-in furniture.

The standard modern home is built for average people; people who are of average height and weight. Is it so out of line to expect home builders to create homes that celebrate the unique, individual characteristics of potential buyers?

Perhaps the best solution to creating your own unique living space is to enlist an experienced quality craftsman to create custom built-in furniture in your home. Built-in furniture becomes a part of the home; traditionally encompassing all styles of architecture and includes furniture such as corner cupboards, closet organizers, kitchen cabinetry, libraries and more. Hand-crafted, built-in furniture combines function with the beauty of wood to provide storage and create a gorgeous focal point for any room.

There are many craftsmen advertising their services online these days. How can you tell which one to hire for your custom building needs? Decide what you want built; in other words do you have a “wasted” space you would like to make into storage or would you like to have a plus-size desk unit built into your home office? Your needs dictate what type of custom built-in furniture you will be looking for; if you have physical needs (such as being very tall or heavy weight) you will want furniture built that is stylish, larger than average and capable of standing up to heavy-duty use.

After determining exactly what you want built, you will need to decide on what sort of material you want for your new furniture. Most built-in units are built of sold wood in order to take advantage of nature’s beauty. While it is true that custom built-in furniture is not cheap to order, be aware that all solid-wood custom furniture is not created equal. Before ordering your furniture, be certain what type of wood will be used.

Shop for quality! Order your custom built-in furniture only from makers who use the best materials. For instance, look for dovetailed corners and self-closing under-mount drawer slides. Traditional and modern techniques combine to create beautiful heirloom quality units in the hands of a caring craftsman. Look for a builder who takes pride in their work, it is important to hire a builder you can count on and communicate with.

Wooden Drawers Built to Last with Traditional Methods

wooden drawers

Are your average-size drawers overflowing? Time to get Big Drawers.

Larger-than-average people have a difficult time finding furniture to fit their lifestyle needs since most furniture is created with the average-sized person in mind. It is not easy to stuff size XXL sweatshirts into an average-sized drawer, nor is it easy to stuff 40 men’s size XXL golf shirts into one drawer. The answer to the drawer dilemma is found in Norfolk, Virginia, with a company named Big Drawers.

At Big Drawers, plus-size furniture is the norm. Over-sized furniture pieces made of solid wood feature oversize wooden drawers with ample space to hold the 40 golf shirts mentioned above. Chests of drawers are the company specialty but any type of furniture can be custom made to suit any client’s wishes.

Big Drawers is unique; Andy Steinberg, the founder of Big Drawers, recognizes the need for over-size furniture. Andy is a larger-than-average guy who simply wanted a chest of drawers capable of holding all his golf shirts. After searching all over the country for a chest to hold his clothes, he ended up having one custom made. This gave him the idea of turning his love of wood and skills in wood crafting into hand crafting heirloom quality chests himself.

Now Andy considers Big Drawers products his personal legacy. His fine heirloom quality, exquisite solid-wood furniture will last more than a lifetime.

Though chests were the genesis of Big Drawers, any type of furniture can be custom made to order. Woods such as black walnut, zebrawood, canary wood and more are available from all over the globe; most are from managed forests. Reclaimed woods such as chestnut and southern heart pine are obtained from old buildings.

Big Drawers features wooden drawers constructed with traditional techniques such as dovetailing and mortise and tenon joinery. These old methods combined with modern techniques result in an exquisite heirloom quality piece of furniture to complement any décor. Wooden drawers are fitted with under-mount, self-closing, full-extension slides to effectively eliminate the slamming noise most drawers make when closed.  The slides also serve to reduce wear on the furniture.

Every piece of furniture built at Big Drawers carries a little of Andy with it, each piece is built with loving care and American pride. Don’t settle for average furniture – Andy doesn’t. Choose the best plus-size furniture available today from Big Drawers Furniture, a truly unique company with a truly unique outlook.
